Remembering Juwan
We have had heavy hearts at The LAB in this last week, learning about the tragic death of one of our students, Juwan. His life was cut short in senseless violence. This was one of Juwan's self portrait photos he created at The LAB last year. His love of photography was evident in his time spent with us. We won't forget how much it matters to give young people a healthy way to find their voice and to realize their talents, worth and potential. Find a way to make a difference in the life of a young person.
It matters.
What's Happening @ The LAB?
The LAB is off and running! We have begun our weekly 1x1 mentorships and our weekly small groups with students, pairing caring adults with youth to work on creative experiences.
Some of the mentorships and groups that have started thus far include: Guitar lessons with Julia, intern from Augsburg; Bike repair with Kent, intern from the U of M; Photography with Natasha, intern from the U of M; Yoga with Svetlana, intern from the U of M & Faith, Guest Wellness Coach from WellWellWell.com; Leadership LAB with Jason, Kyle and Guest inspiration Melvin Carter from Save our Sons; Writing & Recording (hip-hop) with Glo, our Creative Arts Specialist;
Theater with Jason, Jessie Rae, intern from St. Kate's & Guest Artist, Brian Grandson; Video Production group with Kyle and Guest Artist Kevin from SPLICE; Groundwork for indoor gardening is underway with Brady, intern from St. Thomas/St. Kates; an Animal Assisted Education (therapy dog) group with Guest Facilitator Jennifer from Paws for Learning;
and a girls Poetry Group with Azania from HECUA/U of M & Guest Artist/Spoken Word performer, Desdmona. It is very exciting to begin to offer these experiences to our youth. We'll keep you posted on their work along the way!
Using African Drumming & Mindfulness Techniques with Youth
Marc Anderson (www.marcanderson.com) provided a great training experience for our LAB team during Intern Orientation. Marc is a local talented musician, drummer and teacher, and also skilled in bringing mindfulness training to youth. We had a great opportunity to experience Marc's work as a team, and we look forward to bringing his wisdom to our youth. Stay tuned!
